Intraperitoneal ascariasis.

Abstract

Seven children with intraperitoneal ascariasis are reported. One of them had two episodes. There were four instances of free worms in the peritoneal cavity, whereas others had peritoneal abscesses containing round worms. It is suggested that peritoneal ascariasis should be suspected whenever a child presents with peritonitis and/or an inflammatory abdominal mass having evidence of ascarial infestation.

The effect of the availability of latrines on soil-transmitted nematode infections in the plantation sector in Sri Lanka.

The relationship of soil-transmitted nematode infections to the availability of latrines was studied among 1,614 children 3-12 years of age living on plantations in Sri Lanka. The majority (89.7%) of the children had at least one type of soil-transmitted nematode. There was a significantly lower mean count of hookworm eggs for children coming from plantations with good sanitary facilities. For Ascaris and Trichuris, a similar association was observed between the mean egg count and the availability of latrines for children from the low-country plantations, where people live in more scattered settlements, but not in the up-country area, where worker settlements are larger and more crowded. Congested living conditions in themselves consequently seem to be a major determinant for ascariasis and trichuriasis, and the provision of latrines and safe water does not substantially change that situation. However, improvements of sanitary facilities will probably have a more immediate effect on the prevalence of hookworm infection.

Biliary ascariasis: report of a case.

A 64-year-old female aborigine presented with acute cholangitis and obstructive jaundice for three days. Abdominal ultrasonography showed dilatation of the common bile duct, intrahepatic ducts and a linear tubular structure in the common bile duct. Duodenoscopy showed a live Ascaris protruding through the papilla of Vater, which was retracted endoscopically. Cholangitis improved dramatically after worm extraction and nasobiliary drainage. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography revealed another worm retained in the common bile duct. It disappeared spontaneously from the common bile duct one week later. The barium study of the intestine showed multiple filling defects in the terminal ileum. A total of five worms passed into the stool after treatment with pyrantel pamoate.

[Biliary ascariasis--a case report].

A 60-year-old male suffered from abdominal pain, chills and fever for two weeks. A vivid Ascaris lumbricoides in the common bile duct and intrahepatic ducts was identified in operation. Chronic cholecystitis was also noted. We discuss the findings of multiple image modalities in biliary ascariasis and review the literature.
