Lateral thigh flap.

Abstract

The lateral thigh flap is a fasciocutaneous flap from the lower limb that can be a versatile and reliable alternative in the reconstruction of specific head and neck defects. This article discusses the anatomy, clinical applications, advantages, and disadvantages of the lateral thigh flap.

Management of sharp esophageal foreign bodies in young children: a cause for worry.

The most common foreign bodies in children are coins, particularly in the age group of 2-5 years. Sharp esophageal foreign bodies in children are not commonly encountered. We present a report of two sharp foreign bodies in young children. Both of them required cervical esophagotomy for removal of the foreign body after an unsuccessful endoscopic attempt. The principles of evaluation and management of sharp and penetrating foreign bodies of the esophagus are described.

Surgical clips to help identify anatomy after a Nissen fundoplication.

Laparoscopic fundoplication has had a remarkable growth in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. But a failure rate of more than 5% has led to increasing numbers of patients with recurrent symptoms presenting for corrective surgery. A simple technique of placing surgical clips on the sutures used to place the wrap helps identify the anatomy during contrast studies and helps plan for corrective surgery.
